The Double Raven

Now that I've built and started painting one Stormraven I find I'm strongly minded to include it in a list and the more I think about it the more I want a second (typical). Here's my first gambit at a double Stormraven list:

HQ
Reclusiarch

ELITE
Terminator Assault Squad
(5) 2x Thunder Hammer & Stormshield, 3x Lightning Claws
Furioso Librarian
Shield of Sanguinius, Wings of Sanguinius
Sanguinary Priest
(1)

TROOP
Assault Squad
(5) Meltagun; Razorback w. Twin-Linked Heavy Flamer
Assault Squad
(5) Meltagun; Razorback w. Twin-Linked Heavy Flamer
Assault Squad
(5) Meltagun; Razorback w. Twin-Linked Heavy Flamer
Death Company
(5) 1x Power Fist & Infernus Pistol, 1x Power Sword
Death Company Dreadnought
Blood Talons

FAST ATTACK
Baal Predator
Flamestorm Canon

HEAVY SUPPORT
Stormraven
Twin-Linked Multi-Melta, Twin-Linked Lascannon
Stormraven
Twin-Linked Multi-Melta, Twin-Linked Lascannon

Right-ho, that's 1750pts on the nose. Nothing too complicated here, the Terminator Squad and Death Company each take a Stormraven accompanied by the Sanguinary Priest & Furioso Librarian and the Reclusiarch & Death Company Dreadnought respectively. The Baal Predator and Flamer-backs rush up in support and to at least give your opponent a moment of pause before he shoots at the Stormravens.

The Death Company Raven is an out-and-out "I'm here to mess you up" unit, everything in it is killy and will give cause-for-concern to almost any unit on the other side of the table. The Terminator Raven is a bit more defensive, The Furioso Librarian gives the Raven a cover save and Wings give him mobility even if his transport is shot down early. Obviously the Terminators are an excellent ofensive and/or counter assault unit, particularly with the Sanguinary Priest supporting them.

In order to scale it down to 1500pts I would just drop the Dreads and perhaps add a Multi-Melta Attack Bike or even another priest. If you want to take it up to 2000pts you could go one of two ways, more target saturation i.e. another Baal and another Flamer-back squad. Or you could benefit from a little more anti-transport/long-range fire power so perhaps another Stormraven or a couple of Landspeeder Typhoons and a bare-bones Predator, at 2000pts it's all about the toys!

As with all my lists, feel free to comment, it's only a first try.

  1. I would make a couple small changes, as I've been experimenting with Stormraven lists recently and yours is pretty close to mine.

First of all, I don't think the Baal Pred is a good fit for the list. Fine tank, but not necessarily what you want to be doing. Second, you REALLY want Extra Armor on the Stormravens- the first time you get Stunned and can't deliver your package, you will be a sad panda. Third, I think you want a couple more bodies in the Death Co, as right now they aren't terribly scary. I would also suggest dropping the Infernus Pistol from them, as it just doesn't help much.

So add ~3 DCwould potentially give you enough to downgrade the Furioso to non-Libby, turn your Reclusiarch into Lemartes, and take a regular Librarian, which is my preferred setup. Having Wings on the Dread is nice, though, so you may want to stay as-is. Adding another ASM squad could be an option if you keep to only six in the DC squad, or you could take some Speeders (MM, natch, possibly with HF as well) to bring additional support. Upgrading the Razors to LasPlas is also an option, as having fire support to back you up is always nice. Last but not least another Priest wouldn't be a terrible idea to help out the Razor squads- in which case some fancy CCWs wouldn't be out of place, either.

  2. I agree about that Librarian. Overall, Librarians can generate a lot more damage for a unit over the course of the game than a Chaplain can (for Blood Angels) assuming the Librarian doesn't get 'hooded. They're nasty :)

  3. Liking the list fudal matey. I have a soft spot for ravens - so liking this route your (and abuse puppy) are doing  - lets get some reports up boys - see how they fare!

I personally have only tried it a couple of times - running mephy and a talon dread - and then a raider full of terminators - it was fun but they do get shot down :/ even though both lists I faced had sweet FA in anti-tank lol.

  4. Thanks Bully, I was thinking about posting a single raven/land raider list later this week ... particularly as I don't have 2 ravens at the mo! How did your list fare?

  5. Cheers, I do usually use librarians but I find them to be a bit fragile in assault units, so I fancy trying the reclusiarch on for size. He's not as big a force multiplier but I reckon he's more handy in a scrap!

Thanks for the comments I'll hive them some thought. I agree on the Baal being out of place and perhaps needing more DC to be truely scary.

  6. The reason I bring the Libby is actually for the Hood (to shut down nasty enemy powers, of which there are more and more these days) and as an emergency 5+ cover save for when I can't go Flat Out or the enemy can ignore it (looking at you, Hydras). Unleash Rage is just there as a second power because it can help swing a fight just enough to be useful- I have tried Blood Lance and other powers in its place.

With careful placement on the charge, the Libby's lack of an invuln doesn't really matter much, as you can just put him next to something nonthreatening (normal trooper) or that you know is going to be pulled as a casualty when your Lightning Claws strike home.
